After attending the Women’s March, standing with Planned Parenthood supporters on the streets of Fargo, and protesting against Donald Tr**p whenever he came into town, I started to see the world differently as well as architecture. This is when I understood how architecture can become political. At the time of this project, I was hearing a lot about the refugees entering Europe. Some fleeing to Germany, others being trapped in Mediterranean and Baltic countries., and most of all, the ones dying on their journey to Europe. I then created a refugee memorial in Sicily, since this small region experiences a heavy flow migrants and I don’t believe there is a memorial in honor of those fleeing hardship. In a time where nationalism and populism have become this dangerous normality, it is important to be moral when being an architect.
